LOVE FOR THE FAMILY

Yesterday, I met with my cousin from Israel and her husband. Here are some pictures in regards to the story. I'll write it later! Now its time to get ready to go pick up Reina at the airport!

Later that day...

These are my auntie Rachel and her husband, and their children, my cousins, Sofia (left) and Estella (right). They immigrated to Israel in 1957.

Sofia was a very beautiful girl. In Israel she married Vova (emphases on the first syllable). When we received their wedding photo album, we viewed and treated it like a museum piece. The couple looked wonderful, like some kind of celebrities!
Sofia and Vova traveled a few times to the United States before, but, I guess, because of my involvement in the Unification Church, were loth to meet me. They are not
at all tolerant  to the Jews, who go into other religions. I don't blame them: that's how they were

taught to think. Once, I tried to explain to Sofia's mother, my aunt Rachel, my experience of finding God, thinking that, because she lived

outside of the Soviet Union with it's atheistic attitudes longer than my parents and could comprehend something about spiritual life, but she said that, I was talking nonsense.
Sofia and Vova also knew, how much my parents suffered, when I left them to become a Moonie, and resented it..
Time softened their apprehension. They decided to get together with me and mine during this trip to the U.S.

As is customary for me, I went a little bonkers in preparation for that meeting. Little by little, though, I managed to control my impulse to go buy new clothes for myself to seem, somehow, prettier and thinner than I really am, as well as lavish presents for my relatives. Amid our car troubles, I hardly registered that, the reunion was going to happen the next day. I grabbed Roberta and together we went to Macy's to buy the only present that made
images (225×225)sense: perfume. OK, OK, I did spend a pretty penny on it and some other things, but who could blame me? They are the family whom I never met before! Actually, my aunt was responsible for funding my family's immigration from the Soviet Union, and I owe them a lot!

This pink, shiny, new face is the result of an hour and a half of the facial treatment! Call me insecure, but I couldn't let my cousin and her husband from Israel see me for the first time the way I looked. I will definitely write a post about that experience, but for now I just want to say: I was happy-(er) with my appearance after that!

To Be Continued...

NOSTALGIC PHOTOS

NOSTALGIC PHOTOS

The second floor balcony and the windows next to it were ours in Moscow. I used to play on the playground here. Even though I was called Dina by everyone at school and outside of it, at home they called me Inna.
My mom would come out and call me from the balcony: "I-n-n-n-a-a!" The kids then began to say that, I was a liar, because I told them that my name was Dina. Good times, good times!

More pictures of our woods.

BEING POSITIVE

I have a good news and a bad one. Which do you want to hear first?
My (new to me) car is very beautiful, but that is not the good news I was talking about.
XJvT2.gif (260×200)
Sorry, it has nothing to do
with broken headlights,
but I just have to
use this cute gif!
As Roberta and I decided to make a quick dash to Macy's last night to buy gifts for my relatives, whom we meet tonight at a hotel in Redwood City, we got into Honda, and realized that, one headlight didn't work. I was trying to stay positive: so what, if we just bought it a day before and already discovered that it whistles on the freeway and has a broken headlight? We can deal with it, right?
cop-pulls-over-a-kid.jpg (500×356)     Later on that same evening I went to pick Sonny up from the BART station (the metro system in our area). Driving home I suddenly heard the police car's siren, and this time it was for me!
I will admit: I don't usually wear seatbelt. I know, its irresponsible of me, but the belt tends to slide right to my neck and cut it uncomfortably. I also think that, in case if we stop suddenly and the belt will get rigid, as they do in such situation, I can get seriously hurt.
So, broken headlight and no seatbelt!
The policeman came over, leaned by my window and asked:
- "Do you know, why I pulled you over?"
In a futile hope to avoid a big ticket, I already put my seatbelt on and didn't want to counteract it by admitting that I wasn't wearing it. So I said weakly:
- "The headlight?"
The policeman nodded in agreement, and I dared to hope, that he didn't notice the other thing.
- "And' - he said - "you weren't wearing your seatbelt. Care to comment on that?"
Over the years I had a few tickets for the same reason and explaining never helped. I almost didn't say anything, but then something made me tell the man, how the seatbelts cut at my neck.
- "I appreciate the honesty, maam. Can I have your driver's license, proof of insurance and registration?"
Despite the fact that, I didn't insure the car yet, he looked at my card for another car, saw that it was current and believed me that we just bought the vehicle which he stopped. He then said:
- "I will give you a warning for not wearing the seatbelt [phew!] and a fix-it ticket for the headlight",

That meant that, if I fix the headlight in the nearest future, I can present my car to a "peace officer" (that's what the police calls the police) and get my ticket cancelled. I am not sure yet if I have to pay a small fine ($25 or so).
Although he was the first cop, who let me off with only a warning for the seat belt violation, I think, its unfair that I have to pay for someone selling me a damaged car just a day before, since I couldn't even have time to repair it!
"Let it go, peace in life is more important than money" - I kept saying to myself. I couldn't help wondering, though, what other surprises are awaiting me in regards to that car!
In conclusion, the bad news is: the car has one more problem, and I got a ticket because of that. The good news is: I avoided a fine for a bigger amount and a lot of headache trying to correct it.

ragecop-yt.gif (260×195)     P.S. Today a mechanic called from the dealership, where I bought the car. He informed us that, the airbags on that kind of the vehicle are being recalled.

JUST WHISTLE, WHILE YOU WORK...

We got a car! Today Mary, Roberta and myself went to see a used Honda, which, after a lot of searching on the internet and a lot of ranting from Taka, I managed to locate at the nearby dealership.
Earlier this week Taka started by saying: "What do you want? Do you need a car? If so, you have to go find it!" Then he pretended to be indifferent to what kind of car I wanted to buy. If I said that we needed another van, he immediately jumped at my throat, trying to convince me to buy a small sedan, because vans guzzle fuel too much. When I tried to show understanding and agree with him to buy a small sedan, he made a 180 degrees turn and assured me that, I should choose the kind of a vehicle that I wanted. Still, his reasons made sense, and I knew that, if I don't listen to him, I'll be hearing about it in the years to come.
It was fine with me. I readily accept his superior knowledge of cars and miles' per gallon concerns. I began to look for a sedan.
MARY
To make sure, I had to convince Mary to accept that idea. She recently lost a job in some stressful circumstances and:
    1. is now more stubborn that usual, striving for control;
    2. I am loth to keep correcting her because she is already under a lot of stress.
deep-sigh-gif.gif (250×142) In other words, I now have two people with whom I am codependent!
Still, this was my car we were buying: I couldn't let Mary dictate, what to get.
We went to some dealerships yesterday. When a salesman there asked me, what kind of car I had in mind, I said: "a sedan" and, at the same instant Mary said: "a van". I kept insisting on my decision, and today Mary was quite compliant.
So, we went to look at a Honda. The small car was old, had a lot of miles on it's odometer, but ran well. We talked to a salesman, ran some figures around, came somewhat, to an agreement. I called Taka for the final approval. He said: "A sedan? What happened to buying a Toyota van?!"
If I could, I would've tried to throttle him at that time. Since I am used to him after these twenty five years, I just gritted my teeth and waited for him to say, what was really on his mind.
"You are buying it for yourself; are you sure, that's what you want?" - he continued. I bit my tongue and clung to a memory that, this morning he sent me the most accepting and kind e-mail of our married life, saying that, he was sure, I was going to find the best car there is for our family.
Soon he realized: I was not going to react in anger to his mind games, like I did many times  before. He went back to consider the idea of saving money on fuel with a smaller car. We ironed out the costs with a salesman and shook hands.
tumblr_m496xyu7GQ1qdh5b6o1_500.gif (500×278)     Suffice it to say that, in the evening Taka and I went to finalize our purchase. The financial dept. guy turned out to be from Russia. He sounded like he was trying to give us a good deal, but then he printed out and unfurled on the table the l-o-o-o-ngest contract that I've ever seen! It looked exactly like something from a movie, when a person makes a deal with the devil! I told him so. He just shined at us with his eyes and teeth (it seemed like he had too many of them at that moment.Teeth, I mean, not eyes!) and pointed out the places to sign.
I brought Sonny with us to ride with me - for moral support. I don't like to drive in the dark. He and I got into the new car, and Taka went home in the old one.
As I was trying to navigate the freeway, I heard a loud whistling sound. "Sonny" - I said - "Turn off the air-conditioner, its distracting me!" Nothing happened. The whistling continued. I didn't want to take my eyes from the dark road, so I raised my voice a bit and admonished Sonny for not doing, what I asked. "Turn off the air-conditioner!" - I snapped.
"It was not turned on in the first place!" - Sonny replied.
Male31-male-smiley-whistle-smiley-e.gif (121×95)      Where did the whistle come from then?! Upon some investigation, we realized that, the air came in through some gap between the window and frame.
MY OLD BLUE VAN ON THE WAY OUT
AND THE NEW (USED) CAR
ON THE WAY IN..
I don't think, the dealership will be willing to do anything to repair the gap. We'll just have to do it ourselves a little later. In the meanwhile, I will try to enjoy my whistling, new to me, car!

ROLLING WITH THE UNIVERSE

Its been a few days since I sat down to write anything. The reason for it is: my laptop needed a break. It started to act crazily: the cursor would not stay where I put it, and the paragraphs just moved up and down the page on their own, inspite of my efforts to arrange them in a certain order. I just began to work on editing one of my stories for publishing it as an e-book, when the computer went bonkers! Was it doing it in protest of extra work, that I imposed on it? Is it the karma for the many transgressions in my life? I don't know. I only felt that, life suddenly turned against me.
On Friday I avoided opening the Blogger pages. I had to go and meet Mr. P., but a head cold descended on me, and I texted my counselor, asking to postpone our session 'til next week. He texted me back, inquiring, if I wanted to make use of the hazmat suit that he has! He was joking, of course, telling me that, if I had Ebola, I should just stay home: he wasn't that committed to his job! Its fine: I was happy to have a friendly "shoot out" with him!
I should've accepted the offer of a non-existent hazmat suit and gone to see him!
Sometimes I have a streak in life, when I have to re-do things two or three times, because nothing goes right! I force myself to focus and devise different methods to ensure that, at least from my side, necessary things will be taken care of. Yesterday showed me that, when someone up there decides to slam you with one mishap after another, there is very little you can do, except hanging on grimly to what's left of the order in your life!
I told you about my van. Its already 14 years old, even though it seems like we got it only yesterday! It has electrical problems, the engine mounts are cracked and, from time to time, various things refuse to work. We decided to wait with repairing it or buying a new car. Money is short.
I spent the whole day at home, nursing my cold, but towards the evening I began to worry about dinner. Cooking it was out of the question: I was too sick and, besides, didn't want to spread my disease around. Sonny affirmed his desire to clean up (I should've known then that, something was wrong in the Universe - he never volunteers for that job!), so it fell to me to go get some food. Roberta hopped off her bed, like a spring chicken, so strong was her wish to get out of the house, and we drove to a little Hawaiian Food cafe in San Lorenzo. I missed my turn on the way back and decided to take freeway. The traffic moved very fast, so we thought that, in a few minutes we'll be home, eating the ice-cream, which Roberta insisted on buying for the family.
     Grrrrrrrrrrrr... thwok, thwok...
The van made strange noises and began to stall. I was in the middle lane, but managed to move to the shoulder of the freeway. Unfortunately, it was right where an exit began, so the place was super narrow, and the cars still came on from behind me with lightning speed.
I turned on the hazard lights and sat back. "Call Triple A" - Roberta piped in. I looked in my wallet: the blasted Triple A card was missing. No matter, I will just call the directory assistance for that number!
My glasses fell and ended up between my seat and the box in the middle. "Its OK", - I told myself - "you can still see everything". The phone tried to follow the glasses, but I scooped it off the floor.
I called the directory assistance. The phone cut out right when the automated voice began to give me the digits. I tried again. The number didn't work!
I sat back and looked at Roberta. "Something is going on..." - I said weakly. What could I do? I asked her: "Please, pray!" In my own mind I also prayed, asking God to forgive my arrogance or a misdeed, which brought this lack of the cosmic favor to us.
I called the police. The phone dropped the call again. I re-dialed and heard the lady-operator admonish me for not staying on the line.
"I did stay!" - I started to object. I guess, my tension was too high, because her voice became threatening, and she hissed: "Don't you yell at me!"
The woman who writes these lines loves to get into a good fight. That was not the time to do it! I bit my tongue. The operator assured me that, they'll send someone to help us.
We waited for a long time. I decided to try my phone again. The directory assistance, who, except for it's stubborn refusal to understand my accent, always comes through for me, this time let me down. It gave me four different numbers for Triple A, and none of them worked! I tried the toll-free directory assistance, and, finally, got the real number.
Before I finished that call, though, a towing truck showed up. The driver parked in a narrow strip in front of us (cars whizzed by, crossing into the next lane to avoid colliding with us and making me squeeze my eyes in fright). He told Roberta and me to get into his truck and began to hook up the van to tow it.
I grabbed the bag with food and ice-cream in one hand and Roberta's hand in another. Together we trotted to the truck, only to stop in front of the door and gaze in horror at the vertically positioned steps, leading to a seat w-a-a-y far above us!
"OK, Roberta!" - I plopped the bag on the asphalt and nudged my poor 81 years old charge towards the stair. She is pretty tall and smart and brave, but the muscles in her arms and legs don't remember, how to deal with the ordeal that we faced. She hoisted herself, and I placed her feet on the steps, at the same time pushing her ample behind up and up
She was in! Now it was my turn. Ignoring my bladder's insistent urges and mind's uncertainty, whether I could do it, I pulled myself into the cabin. Sitting there next to Roberta, shaking like in a malaria fit with the truck's movements, I let go of my anxiety. I patted Roberta's hand and asked the driver, where he was from.
The attack of the negative energy was over. The driver took us and the van home, where I helped Roberta down (at one point she was literally sitting on my shoulder). I went to the bathroom and came back to see the van being unloaded. Before, I would've told myself that, I had to just stay with the driver, no matter, what my condition was. Now I took care of my responsibility and of myself, took it easy and in stride
Despite the fact that, I have no car, I feel pretty good. What is it that Mr. P. always says" Ah, this: "Be nice to yourself!" What's the use in fretting and imagining the worst, as well as pushing yourself foolishly? This life needs strength and calm, and that's how we will roll from now on!

PHOTOS

Some pictures from Moscow. My friend went especially to the place where we grew up and took these photos.

I used to live in this building. If you look close enough, you'll see the green benches by the doors. The gossip-hungry ladies used to sit there and avidly discussed every tenant, who came through their gauntlet. When I worked in theater, there were many rumors going on about, what I was up to on my job. Every time I had to pass by the ladies on the bench, I began to, for some reason, swerve, as if I was drunk! I was always starving, so that could be the reason for that phenomena, or it was in my character to challenge the small-minded burgers.

This is the St. George's Church

built near my old neighborhood.

I don't know, whose sculpture this is, but I like it!

We often went to the woods and spent time there,
talking about the things which inspired us.

Whether due to a teenager's angst, or because I really felt that, something was missing from my life: a love, a purpose, - every moment was filled with the longing.

THE RACE AND THE DISCIPLINE

I looked at Mr. P. in embarrassment. For two weeks we talked about the ways for me to organize and improve my life, but, even though I gave it a thought and tried to find a template for a daily planner, I invariably switched my attention to something else and forgot all about it the very next minute. There is no explanation for this kind of fickle mind!
We sat in Mr. P.'s small, canary carpeted living room, discussed my progress, punctuated in regular intervals by his cat's snorting and snoring. The poor thing adores my counselor and doesn't want to be away from him.
It was very hot. The thermometer will get up to 92 degrees F, before it'll decide to go down for the night. I didn't mind the heat.

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses,
let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us"  Heb. 12:1.

These are the words with which apostle Paul encouraged the Christians to focus on their tasks and find ways to be successful. Further on, he talked about the route of the said "race" being cleared of all obstacles and the runner picking up his garment and tucking it in the rope which held his robe together, so that nothing would be in the way of finishing the race.
Am I making any sense? No?

"And have you forgotten the encouraging words God spoke to you as his children? He said,
“My child, don’t make light of the LORD’s discipline,
and don’t give up when he corrects you.
For the LORD disciplines those he loves,
and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.”  Heb. 12-5,6.

I was so inspired by these words because after all the times, when I failed at some task or venture, God still wants me to succeed, and He provides guidance to people like me, reminding me of the necessity to be focused, organized and disciplined.
I Want To Succeed! I want to lose weight and keep it off. I want my writing to be published. Most of all, I want my children and family to be successful in everything that they do, and, if I am the one, who drags them down by my laissez-faire, then I want to do better, so my children will see that, it is more beneficial to be disciplined and organized.
